Gas prices boost T ridership to new record
BOSTON – Total ridership on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s buses, trains, boats and trolleys increased 6.13 percent in the fiscal year ended June 30 to a record 374.79 million, the MBTA said in its annual report today.

Sovereign 2Q profit falls 13.57% to $127.44M
PHILADELPHIA – Sovereign Bancorp Inc., the parent company of Sovereign Bank, reported a first-quarter profit of $127.44 million, a 13.57-percent decline from the year-ago $147.45 million, on revenue that fell 9.08 percent to $1.21 billion. “Given the challenging operating environment, I am pleased with our results,” said President and CEO Joseph P. Campanelli.

I used to be able to count on one hand the must-attend shows and conferences related to online marketing for a given year. Plotting out my travel schedule wasn’t much trouble and there wasn’t really any overlap among shows. And for the most part I was also able to tack on a few personal and vacation days to most of my trips in order to simulate actually having a “vacation”.

Mentoring at Affiliate Summit
I like to use events as milestones to get things. Lots of times I’ll just pick a show or conference and decided that I must have X,Y, and Z all finished before, say, Affiliate Summit in Boston. When I initially make the plan, the event always seems so far off – giving me plenty of time to plow through the long list of must-do’s. But along the way other things crop up, I get sidetracked, or I find some other excuse to delay doing what needs to be done.

Yahoo to Microsoft: No Thanks!
Yahoo formally rejected a proposal from Microsoft and Carl Icahn in a statement issued on Saturday.
They had been given 24 hours to reach a decision by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on Friday night. They reached a decision, but probably not the one that Ballmer and Icahn were looking for.
Yahoo says that its advertising deal with Google offers "superior financial value, reports Kyung Bok Cho at Bloomberg.

Ratings drop as hospitals bleed from bottom line
The reports came within days: Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services dropped their ratings on $10.6 million of 1994 Westerly Hospital bonds to “BB-” from “BB”; Fitch Ratings downgraded $18.6 million worth of 1999 bonds from St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island to “BB” from “BBB-”; and Landmark Medical Center got a court-appointed special master to try to avert receivership and possible closure.

Gerhardt named interim leader at Save The Bay
PROVIDENCE – Save The Bay today named Michael Gerhardt, whom the nonprofit described as a “leadership transition veteran,” to serve as interim executive director while the environmental group seeks a permanent successor to Curt Spalding.
The nonprofit said it is interviewing top candidates now. “As a longtime member of Save The Bay, I look forward to the opportunity to assist in this critical organization’s leadership transition process,” Gerhardt said today.

RIPTA gets $1.34M federal aid for IT drive
PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transportation Authority will receive $1.34 million in federal aid to expand its Intelligent Transportation System, bringing global positioning systems (GPS) and other technology to all its regular bus routes statewide. As welcome as that money may be, however, it cannot be used toward RIPTA’s looming budget deficit, so the agency also is weighing possible systemwide service cuts.

AAA: R.I. gas prices resume their rise
PROVIDENCE – “For the first time in three weeks, gasoline prices in Rhode Island have risen,” according to AAA Southern New England. The average self-serve price of unleaded regular at local stations rose 1 cent per gallon over the past week to $4.109, while other grades of fuel rose 2 cents. Blue Cross won’t cover costs tied to hospital errors
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island has issued a “statement of principle” saying it will not pay health care providers – specifically, hospitals – for costs associated with 28 “serious reportable events” such as wrong-site surgery, severe bedsores, or patient death or disability resulting from a fall or from the use of contaminated drugs or devices.

U.S. jobless rate steady in June at 5.5%
