$11.3M relief for Mass. fishermen set to begin

BOSTON – The Bay State this week will disburse $11.3 million in federal aid to more than 500 commercial fishermen and fishing businesses hurt by limits on the harvest of “groundfish” such as cod, haddock and flounder. Those payments are slated to be issued this Friday, by electronic fund transfer (EFT) or check, the governor’s office said today.

R.I. child poverty rate worsens in 2007

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island lost ground on child poverty last year, when the statewide rate was the 20th lowest nationwide according to a report this afternoon by Rhode Island Kids Count. In this year’s analysis, the Ocean State fell three notches from its 17th-place finish in 2006 but remained 15 places above 2005’s 35th-place finish. In child health coverage, however, the state was No. 11, with 6.9 percent of children uninsured in the 2005-2007 period.

Council 94 dispute heads back to court

PROVIDENCE – The dispute between the state and its largest labor union continues. Rhode Island Council 94 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, is seeking a stay of an R.I. Superior Court ruling that declined to forbid governor from imposing new health-care fees on some state workers. The parties were slated to meet with the judge today, for the second time since last week’s ruling.

July PPI shows largest increase since 1981

PROVIDENCE – Citizens Financial Group Inc. today posted a $726 million operating profit for the first half of 2008, a decline of $515 million, or 41.50 percent, from the year-ago period’s $1.24 billion. But its parent, Royal Bank of Scotland plc, posted a first-half loss of 5.9 billion pounds ($11.4 billion). RBS CEO Fred Goodwin, left, called the results “unsatisfactory.”

Star Gas posts fiscal 3Q gain of $11.85M
The nation’s largest retail distributor of home heating oil, Star Gas Partners L.P. (NYSE: SGU), posted a profit of $11.85 million for its fiscal third quarter – compared with a year-ago net loss of $8.27 million – on total sales that rose 16.01 percent to $248.07 million. “Margin management is crucial, since a large portion of our operating costs … are of a fixed nature,” said CEO Daniel P. Northeast leads nation in farm prices
ITHACA, N.Y. – “While commercial and residential development has slowed in many regions, farm real estate values continue to increase,” according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report that set the average price per acre this year at a record to a record $2,350. Carcieri imposes health fees on union workers
PROVIDENCE – In an executive order today, Gov. Donald L. Carcieri (shown signing the state budget in June) imposed health-plan changes and fees on the members of all state employee unions that have not ratified the state’s “memorandum of settlement.” His action drew a swift response from the state’s largest union: “Today, Governor Carcieri has made a difficult situation worse,” said Council 94 Executive Director Dennis R. Grilli.
