Google Hopes The Thought Really Counts
We didn’t verify if Google really has a history of $20,000-$30,000 holiday bonuses for employees. Regardless of past amounts, Googlers are getting Google phone instead this year. There is, after all, an economic crisis going on.

Top 25 Things You Loved to Talk About in 2008
I've always felt that comments have the ability to enhance articles, as they expand the conversation and often provide more thoughtful insight into the topic being written about. Of course this is not always true. There is plenty of spam, and always a fair amount of unconstructive criticism, name calling, and general ugliness. But it's a small price to pay for making content more community-driven, which still overall, I feel is more useful to the end-user in the long run.

R.I. Foundation sets grant record
PROVIDENCE – Despite record unemployment and a worsening economy, The Rhode Island Foundation this year awarded $27 million in grants, the most in the 93-year-old organization’s history. Marketers Not Too Social
This week there seems to be a lot of reports, research and studies about marketers and social media. Here’s a sampling:
According to a new survey of 180 chief marketing officers at brands with revenues ranging from $250 million to over $10 billion, 55 percent of the CMOs at leading brands surveyed say they’re not too interested (22 percent), or not interested at all (33 percent), in incorporating the social networking sites into their marketing strategies. And just 10 percent of the CMO survey respondents say they already are using social networking sites in their marketing plans.

Fed rate cut fuels late-day stock rally
U.S. stocks rallied this afternoon after Federal Reserve policymakers cut two key interest rates, in the 10th such reduction of the past 16 months. Analysts who predicted the Federal Open Market Committee would set a 0-percent target for its benchmark federal funds rate saw their forecast miss the mark, but not by much.

R.I. is 26th, Mass. 11th, in Generosity Index
VANCOUVER – Rhode Island lagged other U.S. states in total charitable giving by residents in 2007, but still outpaced even the most generous of Canadian provinces, according to the nonprofit Fraser Institute’s latest two-nation Generosity Index. “The data clearly show that in most instances, Americans give more of their income to registered charities than Canadians,” said Niels Veldhuis, the institute’s director of fiscal studies.

Finexo has just made a great new update to the program. The Finexo commissions are split into two payments totaling $100. A commission of $25 upon customer deposit and sign-up and $75 when the customer becomes an active trader (usually occuring after 15-20 trades). Deficit has towns eying consolidation

RehabCare pulls out of deal to buy Rehab Hospital
WOONSOCKET – St. Louis-based RehabCare Group Inc. (NYSE: RHB) has withdrawn its agreement to purchase Landmark Health Systems Inc.’s Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island, citing a dispute over employee health benefits, the care providers said. But, said Richard R. Charest, president of RHRI and Landmark, “it will be business as usual at the hospital.”

Online Marketers Eye Green Monday
Market research figures for Black Friday and Cyber Monday were a mixed bag with analysts reporting widely varying figures for online shopping.
The biggest online shopping day is expected to be Dec. 15., which is being called Green Monday. Some researchers are expecting that 32 percent of holiday sales are expected to take place that day as procrastinators and budget shoppers hold out for better deals. It's also typically the last day that consumers can wait and still get free shipping.

Hulu Adds More User Experience Enhancing Features
Hulu introduced a couple of new features today to enhance the user experience. This comes only a week or so after the site launched other features to improve its search functionality.
The first new feature is a recommendation section for users with accounts. To get Hulu's personalized recommendations, simply login and go to your profile page and you will find a new tab for this area.read more

October jobless rates rise in Providence, New Bedford metro areas
WASHINGTON – The unemployment rate in Providence-Fall River-Warwick posted the biggest year-over-year increase of any major metropolitan area in October, as local payrolls shrank faster than the area’s work force, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The New Bedford-area jobless rate, although down slightly from September, also rose compared with a year ago.

This script creates a nice little format for displaying testimonials. The container is initially displayed in a collapsed stated, and then expanded for the entire testimonial. It can also be used to highlight comments, featured products or news stories. Easy to implement. A nice addition to any site!

In a mildly weird fashion, Google answered some questions regarding HTTP status codes and "if-modified-since" from users who were either made up or had their names changed to protect their anonymity. Names like Little Jimmy, Temp O'Rary, Janet Crinklenose, and Frankie O'Fore (my apologies to any Janet Crinklenoses who may be out there, but I think I'm safe in my assumption that the name is fictitious).read more

Black Friday Online Sales Better Than Anticipated
After numerous online retailers predicted dismal sales on Black Friday, it looks like their nervousness may have been a bit premature. Both eBay and Amazon saw consumer turnout higher than expected, most of which was searching for electronics of course. Reuters is reporting that the most searched for product on eBay was the Nintendo Wii, which 3,171 were sold on the site.read more
